Andy` s Valedictory Speech

An Excerpt from Andy Cano during his high school graduation day last April 5, 2005 at TIGNAPOLOAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL. This speech reminds us how the schools and the homes are related in nurturing the children. How teachers and parents are responsible in educating their children.

Our honored guest Mrs. Virgita E. Alingig - our dynamic school head Mr. Wilfredo Coming, our active Barangay Captain Renato Rances, our honored Barangay Councilors, our dear parents, beloved teachers, fellow graduates, friends, ladies and gentlemen....good morning.

Today`s graduation marks the most significant event in my life. This also signals my graceful exit from my beloved alma matter in order to access another challenging world to carry out the best option I choose for a better future.

But whatever vocation we will take, we will never forget that our years in basic education have the most contribution of our becoming a socially responsible individuals and as being the graduates here in front of you.

Yes, the school is next to our own homes. Before I go further I would like to take this opportunity to elaborate the words home and school. in prologue of Ad Continuum Home and School collaboration periodical - the home come from an Anglo-Saxon term means " A place where comfort refuge healing and rest take place". On the other hand, the school in Greek means " A place for leisure where one can contemplate on reality". So both the home and school are places where the children are nurtured to be able to grow in their understanding about love and truth as they mature in future years. As implied by the meaning, the school and home these two entities have the crucial participation in the formation of our complete development as a person.

The home is the primary source of knowledge and values. Our parents and whoever is taking care of us are our chief source of truth. At home we learn the most fundamental knowledge, attitudes, values and  skills. In acquisition of these basic competencies at home trust builds up. The home becomes  a permanent environment as well as point of reference for us. This indicates that the home has primary responsibility for the education of the children.

On the other hand, the school as an educational institution participates in the crucial total development of the learners. According to SIZER in 1999, the teachers contribute much to the development of their students as both undergo the teaching learning process respectively. Teachers are the most representative persons for the school since they are the ones who directly work with the students. SIZER said further that the teachers make difference in the lives of their students through the teaching process. They help the children grow into educated and righteous individuals.

Now, the main reason why I am talking about home and school because these two institutions have positive consequences for the children in the context of quality education. Both parents and  teachers having the same objectives which is to form the child have overlapping responsibilities in the child's education. It is important to know that a good relationship must exist between the home and school. The home-school partnership is significant because the school are not the only ones responsible for educating the children. Teachers need parents - schools need homes and vice versa. ARONZON in 1995 emphasize that parental involvement increases the academic success of students and improve the children's attitudes and  values as well.

If parents and teachers forges together shoulder to shoulder in giving the school the most preferential attention, by no means they will reap an astounding outcomes.

Our progressive administrators, innovative teachers and ever loving parents consciously work in solidarity, sacrificing, and patiently do their best that we may grow fully into socially responsible individuals ready to accept task and predicament yoke upon us by the next decades.

Beautiful parents, rejoice! because in your very eyes you reap what you have sown. The thought of leaving is not beautiful. It is something we don` t want to happen that will just happen anyway. Life is a series of leaving, yet, every act of leaving doesn` t  mean to obscure the past but meant to stir that there is something in the past that keeps us wherever we are now and will keep us going in the future.

So many beautiful things are still left unsaid. As synthesis, allow me to reecho John Keat` s prophetic vision as he aptly anticipated a momentous event like this when he announced, " A thing of beauty is a joy forever".

May this beautiful experience keep us united with one another and ultimately with God.

Once again, a pleasant morning to all.
